A HOOT AND A ROMP

Mary Doyle (my deputy editor) and I confessed that we did not have an inkling as to what this production would provide. However, the attendance of several known and friendly faces at the pre-show reception was somewhat reassuring.

Once the zany and hyper-active Feste, the Countess' fool (SAMUEL DUTTON) had outlined the plot, we were soon enjoying the intrigue, mischief created so delightfully by the talented cast.

NICOLA EMSLEY and MATTHEW HARPER were well matched as the twins Viola and Sebastian and, although it took quite a stretch of the imagination to accept Nicola's switch into the Cesario 'male' role, she brilliantly created all the fun as she skilfully avoided the amorous advances of the Countess Olivia (beautifully enacted by JO-ANNE NIGHY) while struggling to control her strong feelings for the ever-preening-and-posing Duke of Illyria Orsino (superbly played by TRISTAN CARTER).

There were wonderful performances throughout and, although the sets were minimal, the costumes and lighting enhanced the spectacle. Full marks for the music as well which seemed to have a 'Les Miserables' influence and underlined the moods well. A highlight for me was the comedy song ('Dressed in a Smile') performed joyously by ALAN CLARKE - who was great value with his few but scene-stealing entrances as Malvolio.

Several large school parties ensured that the Ashcroft auditorium was packed. And how did they react to this artistic endeavour? My faith in today's schoolchildren has, I confess (again), been somewhat restored. Not only did those present behave but they positively howled their approval - although the reaction was certainly at the highest level when finally the 'correct' pairings of the lovers had been established and celebratory kissing and coupling ensured.

Mary and I left the theatre agreeing that Julian Chenery, Matt Gimblett and William Shakespeare are and were very clever people. I can't wait for this company's next Shakespearian 'Hoot'n'Romp'!
