Shakespeare 4 Kidz THE TEMPEST - New Theatre, Hull - January 2005

Having seen the outstanding Shakespeare 4 Kidz  production of Macbeth last year, I was looking forward to The Tempest, their first new show in four years. Adapted by Julian Chenery ( book and lyrics) and Matt Gimblett  ( music and lyrics ), this is another quality production, banishing once and for all the idea that Shakespeare is “boring”!  Full of catchy tunes and witty lyrics that move the story along, this show engaged the young audience’s attention immediately.

We learnt how Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan ( Jason Lee Scott ) arrived on the island some twelve years ago with his young daughter Miranda ( Ellie Kirk ), having been driven from power by his wicked brother Antonio (Tim Frost ).  Prospero has since gained magical powers and has plans for those who conspired against him.

We laughed at the hilarious slapstick antics of the three fools, Caliban ( Paul Parris ) Stephano ( Ed Burnside ) and Trinculo ( Matthew Hodgson ) -  the cloak scene and rendition of the song , “ You Can Depend On Me ” went down particularly well with the audience.

With the help of his loyal servant Ariel ( Ali James ), Prospero’s master plan succeeds, and all ends well – cue for the uplifting song, “Reunited ”, sung with spirit (!) by the entire cast.

Shakespeare 4 Kidz are a company to watch out for, combining energy, enthusiasm and excellence!
