Romeo and Juliet

Billed as Romeo and Juliet the Musical, this production would not please the purists.

But Shakespeare 4 Kidz's laudable aim is to make the Bard's plays accessible for young children.

Which means, in the case of Julian Chenery's and Matt Gimlett's fast-paced adaptation, updating the period, simplifying the text, using projected backdrops to contextualise scenes, highlighting comedy, interspersing the action with catchy songs, dance routines and slapstick, and introducing some novel characterisation.

Matt Brinkler was a glamorous, engaging Romeo with Jenny Perry a lively, if occasionally shrill, Juliet. Noel Andrew Harron almost stole the show as Mercutio with camp demeanour.

The Montagues in Hawaiin shirts and the Capulets in leather jackets were well-characterised.

The whole cast were energetic and committed in a production that was greatly enjoyed.
