S4K PRESS RELEASE24th February 2009For immediate release Rocking on the RockThousands of Gibraltar schoolchildren will get an exciting first taste of the Bard this summer thanks to innovative UK company Shakespeare 4 Kidz. After a successful British tour with Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest from September to March, the company head for Gib in June with eight performances of the world’s greatest love story, Romeo and Juliet, in a rock and rolling musical adaptation. The tour has been arranged by Cynthia Eagle, the Director of Culture, on behalf of the Gibraltar government and follows S4K’s visit last year with The Tempest. The Gibraltar government sponsorship mean 3000 pupils aged five and upwards will be given free tickets and programme for the show, which runs from June 16 to 19 at the John Mackintosh Hall. And due to public demand there will be a limited number of tickets on sale to the public as last year so many people expressed a desire to see the show, explained promoter Ros Astengo. “Gibraltar follows the UK school curriculum so therefore Shakespeare is a vital part of their English studies,” she added. “We are very excited about S4K coming out again.” S4K shows have been a treat for British schoolchildren for 13 years since the company started taking its unique versions of the Bard’s classics to professional venues nationwide. There are six shows in the repertoire, all written by S4K founder and chief executive Julian Chenery and his musician writing partner Matt Gimblett: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Hamlet and Macbeth, which sets out for a UK revival this autumn. Each one is hallmarked by an easy-to-understand style which takes all the famous quotes from the original, weaves them into modern language and adds plenty of song and dance into the mix creating a recipe for great educational entertainment. Although they are aimed at young audiences and help immeasurably when it comes to studying Shakespeare’s works in greater depth, adults usually find they love S4K shows too. The lively interpretations blow away all the cobwebs and stuffiness which often led to boredom in the classroom back in the days when they were kids themselves. Julian Chenery is delighted to be taking his Romeo and Juliet to Gibraltar. “Visiting Gibraltar is an excellent strategic move for us, a stepping stone towards reaching out to every English-speaking country in the world with our versions of works by the world’s greatest playwright.” Ends NOTE TO EDITORS 1.
