Juliet finds a new Romeo

The path of true love never did run smooth and when Juliet found she’d been “dumped” by Romeo it left Shakespeare 4 Kidz director Julian Chenery with a problem.

The actor playing the role left the company and Chenery had to find a new Romeo – and fast – so that the spring tour of Shakespeare’s most famous love story could go ahead.

But it was a case of all’s well that ends well when he found and cast dishy 22 year old blond Matt Brinkler.

“Our Romeo has to be good looking, a great actor and be able to sing and dance too. It’s a tall order but Matt is going to be great in the part,” said Chenery.

And Matt is over the moon at landing the role. "Romeo Montague is a dream of a role and S4K's style is vibrant, exciting and fun: everything that good musical theatre should be. I can't wait!"

Matt, who comes originally from Ely in Cambridgeshire but now lives in Greenwich, south London, previously  appeared in Soul Traders at the 2008 Edinburgh Festival and was Swedish boyfriend Sven in the recent hit cult movie Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.

That was all great practice for his Romeo role, which requires the occasional song with Juliet.

“I had to do loads of kissing in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging but it all ended up on the cutting room floor as it’s not in the film,” says Matt.

He managed to learn the part of Romeo in just two days but says unless he had watched the archive DVD of his predecessor in the role nothing could have prepared him for the audience reaction to the kissing scenes.

“The kids gasp, giggle and squeal yuk very loudly!” he explained.

Romeo and Juliet tours the country in tandem with The Tempest until April 3. Check out the S4K website at www.shakespeare4kidz.com to find a venue near you.
