Edna's Back! Hairspray Diva returns to Dubai in S4K's Dream

Hairspray diva Edna returns

He wowed Dubai in the summer with his head-turning portrayal of Hairspray diva Edna Turnblad. Now actor Antony Stuart-Hicks is returning to DUCTAC in a role so different his fans might not recognise him.

ASH plays Peter Quince in the Shakespeare 4 Kidz magical musical adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.   Quince is a weaver who has written a play which he hopes his friends will be able to perform as part of the celebrations for a royal marriage. But he has reckoned without the interference of naughty sprite Puck, who spirits away his leading actor Bottom and casts a spell which saddles him with an asses head.

He also has to keep control – and a straight face – when the men actually perform their play, which turns into a riot of fun as Bottom refuses to lie down and die quietly!

ASH, an S4K stalwart, will be visiting Dubai fresh from a stint in pantomime in Devon, playing Widow Twankey in Aladdin in even more bizarre frocks and with even more zany make-up than he wore for his amazing turn as Edna.

Liverpool-born ASH, just turned 26, specialises in character roles and loves playing dame in panto. As the youngest professional pantomime dame in the UK, his Christmastime credits include Widow Twankey in Aladdin, Sarah the Cook in Dick Whittingon, Dame Dolly Mixture in Snow White and Lily O’Grady in Cinderella.

His versatility has also extended to playing Colonel Mustard in Cluedo, Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers and Kaa the snake in Jungle Book.

He started young in showbiz, becoming a pro at just 11 and has spent the last 15 years as an actor/producer working alongside such eminent professionals as Dame Maggie Smith, Ken Dodd and Susan Penhaligon.

Previous roles for S4K have largely involved penciling on the stage-wrinkles and Quince is no exception. ASH describes the character as: “Fastidious, acutely organised and a worrier who has an aspiration to be a great director.

But as anyone familiar with the play will know, the Tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe turns into an hilarious fun-fest.

ASH will also be doubling as another oldie, Hermia’s grumpy dad Egeus.

So, if you enjoyed him in Hairspray, go along for some fairyland fun in the Athenian woods and find out what Edna did next!
