S4K PRESS RELEASE

9th March 2009
For immediate release

Director to play the king

Everyone who sees the Shakespeare 4 Kidz production of The Tempest at the Felixstowe Spa Pavilion is in for a royal treat.

The show’s writer and director Julian Chenery will be going on as Alonso, the King of Naples.

It’s the first time he’s covered one of the company roles since he played the more humble part of Snug the Joiner in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Sunderland Empire in 2007.

“I’m really looking forward to getting on stage again: it was a case of the show must go on as one of the cast members has to be away that day and the main understudy is covering another role,” he said.

“Baddies are always the most fun to play. Alonso is a bit of a villain – he has helped Antonio overthrow Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan. He ends up in a terrible shipwreck and thinks his son is dead.”

The musical keeps to Shakespeare’s original story but weaves famous quotes into modern language so that the story is easy to follow. There are plenty of songs and dances to make the show appeal to audiences of all ages.

The Tempest is at The Spa Pavilion at 10.30am and 1.30pm on Monday March 16. Box office: 01394 282126.

What they say about us:

"To any teachers who think it might be too 'dumbed down' for top set Year 9 students: don't be fooled. Over the years, every single friend we have invited along to these performances has fallen under the spell. One child (who subsequently came in the top 5 in the country for GCSE English)said that she understood and enjoyed the S4K Macbeth much better than anything they were doing at school for KS3 SATS. It is Shakespeare 4 Kidz that inspired my eldest to take A Level English Literature. Both she and my middle child have now read several original Shakespeare play for pleasure and now enjoy quoting their favourite passages."
