One performing company that is definitely making movies is Shakespeare 4 Kidz, known for music-theatre versions of the plays. It is in preproduction on a series of six film musicals, including a Hamlet directed by the playwright John Godber. “I actually am not a huge Shakespeare fan,” the company’s founder, Julian Chenery, confides disarmingly. “But we’ve got a chance to work in 3D, an evolving technology that adds texture and colour. We’re working on a slate of projects that has longevity and engages young people.”

Chenery and his producer, Mark Thomas, have been prompted by the medium’s immersive quality and increasing affordability. They hope to straddle entertainment and education; as Chenery observes, there’s a huge international school audience studying Shakespeare, offering “an opportunity to make them enjoy it instead of endure it. It’s quite clear to me that audiences are engaging with 3D and they want more”. He believes we will be watching the 2012 Olympics on 3D screens.

Thomas will test investor appetite for the films in Cannes, where about 65 3D films are scheduled, most made outside America. Although current content is aimed at family audiences, enthusiasts see no barriers.

What they say about us:

S4K ROMEO: "The Tennant/Hamlet effect will introduce some to the Bard - but it is companies like this who do the real work. They make it accessible without dumbing down too much and show that Shakespeare is not someone to fear."
