Shakespeare 4 Kidz: Romeo & Juliet @ the Sands

Children’s favourites Shakespeare 4 Kidz are back with a new musical tour of Romeo and Juliet in 4 weeks time.

When it comes to making the Bard’s plays appealing to children Shakespeare 4 Kidz is in a class of its own. S4K has introduced millions of young people to the magical world of Shakespeare over the last 15 years with its modern musical adaptations of not only Romeo and Juliet but also Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, The Tempest and even Hamlet.

Kids love them because they can understand them. The complicated stories and complex text are simplified by the use of modern language linking together the most famous and best-loved lines. And there are catchy songs and dances too.

Look out for Noel Andrew Harron as zany Mercutio, Sean Luckham as Peter, the servant riding his scooter, Antony Stuart-Hicks as madcap Friar Lawrence and Olivia Chenery, last year’s fairy queen Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as the doomed child bride Juliet.

Shakespeare’s tragedy of the star-crossed teenagers is probably the most famous love story in the world. It’s been retold in countless ways since Shakespeare first put his play on stage some 400 years ago. But never has it been told in the same exuberant child-friendly way which Shakespeare 4 Kidz promise. Love and hate, laughter and tears, politics and religion, power and passion, S4K’s Romeo and Juliet has got them all and in a way everyone can relate to. The themes are as relevant and topical now as at any time in the play’s history and S4K are experts at putting the play’s message across with a unique balance of comedy and poignancy.

Children as young as eight can enjoy this show and adults who have been put off Shakespeare because they remember boring lessons at school will be amazed at how it shakes up Shakespeare to tell the tale clearly and concisely.

The company also offers school drama workshops on all of its titles plus play-in-a-day cross curricular school experiences based on Macbeth (Mini Macbeth) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Day Dream).

Shakespeare 4 Kidz Romeo & Juliet commences at 10.30am and 1.30pm on Thursday 2nd February. Tickets adults £16, under 16s £10, plus schools & groups rates* plus a booking fee are available from The Sands Centre Box Office on 01228 633766 or online at www.thesandscentre.co.uk. What they say about us:

S4K MACBETH: "I brought my Year 6 class to Southend yesterday to see Macbeth. it was brilliant!!! We have come to see your performances for the past three years and they have all been spectacular. When we started looking at Shakespeare in class there wasn't a lot of enthusiasm because of past experiences, however your shows have really made my class able to access the plays!!!"
