The plays set for study for 2009 are The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet - S4K musical versions of both plays are in our 2009 touring repertoire.

2009 key stage 3 English test: Shakespeare set sections

There are two sections specified for each play. Schools should note that pupils are required to study both of the set sections.

The Shakespeare paper

The model of the Shakespeare paper remains unchanged. Each paper (one for each of the two plays) will:

* contain a task based on two extracts, each drawn from one of the set sections
* will be based on one of the following four areas of assessment:

* text in performance
* character and motivation
* language of the text
* ideas, themes and issues.

The two papers may each cover a different area of assessment. This ensures that all areas are covered across the different plays over time and that the areas of assessment selected are best suited to the set sections.

The Tempest set sections for the 2009 test are as follows:

Act 1, Scene 2, lines 376 to 505
‘Come unto these yellow sands’
to
‘Come, follow. Speak not for him.’

AND

Act 3, Scene 1 (whole scene)
‘There be some sports are’
to
‘Much business appertaining.’

The Romeo and Juliet set sections for the 2009 test are as follows:

Act 1, Scene 1, lines 98 to 232
‘Who set this ancient quarrel new abroach?’
to
‘I’ll pay that doctrine, or else die in debt.’

AND

Act 2, Scene 2, lines 1 to 157
‘He jests at scars that never felt a wound.’
to
‘But love from love, toward school with heavy looks.’
